Size, squareness and flatness measurement of tiles
The tile passes through a bridge that captures edge silhouettes and top-surface profiles. Edge lengths, diagonal difference and flatness are evaluated together; a tile outside the limits is separated.
Size, diagonal difference and surface deviation are written to the tile record; the calibre grade is sent to the PLC. A tile outside the limits is separated by the pusher.

Need
Shrinkage after firing can change edge lengths and squareness. Glossy glaze, curved edges and surface bow cannot be distinguished from a top image alone.
Solution approach
A backlight between narrow belts creates the edge silhouette; telecentric cameras viewing the corners locate lengths and diagonals. Two overhead laser profile sensors collect surface sections; a deviation map is calculated against the reference plane.
Process steps
- 01
Infeed
Narrow transport belts bring the tile to the measurement gap.
- 02
Edge image
Corner silhouettes are captured against the backlight.
- 03
Surface profile
Two laser lines scan the top surface in sections.
- 04
Measurement and grade
Diagonals and surface deviation are compared with the reference.
- 05
Separation
A non-conforming tile is pushed aside; its calibre grade is recorded.
