Multi-output seed sorting by silhouette size
Seeds arrive individually from a channel in front of a backlight. Silhouette size and axis are measured and accepted size grades become output addresses; an air jet routes small and non-conforming seeds to a separate bin.
Measured size, grade and trigger position are linked to an output address in the PLC. Out-of-grade seeds are separated; numbers are illustrative and acceptance limits are set during sample and process validation.

Need
Seed orientation and natural shape vary; overlapping products can appear larger than their actual size. Gauging must follow the silhouette and fitted major axis, with overlaps kept separate.
Solution approach
A feed chute presents an individual seed to the backlight. A side camera extracts major axis and length from the silhouette; calibration assigns an illustrative size grade. Flight position is tracked from the trigger and an addressable air jet directs the seed to its output.
Process steps
- 01
Infeed
The seed enters the singulation chute from the hopper.
- 02
Trigger and acquire
The backlight forms a silhouette for the side camera.
- 03
Analyse
The major axis and contour length are calculated.
- 04
Class and position
Size grade and jet address are linked to flight position.
- 05
Controlled sorting
The addressed jet directs the seed into its target bin.
