Code reading on standard and dental implants
The small code laser-marked on the cylindrical surface of the implant is read under the diffuse illumination of a dome light. The decoded lot and serial data are compared with the work order and written to the traceability record; an implant from the wrong lot or with an unreadable code is flagged.
The code and read result of every implant are written to the traceability record together with its tray position; an implant from the wrong lot or with an unreadable code is flagged on the display and the stack light, and the tray nest is reported to the operator.

Need
The code is marked with sub-millimetre cells on a shiny, curved titanium surface; under directional light the surface reflection washes the code out and the curvature compresses it in one direction. Thread flanks and tray nests add misleading edges to the image.
Solution approach
The tray advances step by step on a linear axis and brings two implants under the reader at each step. The dome light illuminates the surface evenly from all directions; glare disappears and the laser-marked cells separate as dark dots. The reader locates the code, decodes it with curvature correction and the result is compared with the lot in the work order.
Process steps
- 01
Position
The tray advances one step and brings the next pair of implants under the reader.
- 02
Acquire
The dome light strobes and the shiny curved surface is imaged under diffuse light.
- 03
Decode
The laser-marked codes are located in the image and decoded; a code that cannot be decoded is flagged.
- 04
Verify
The lot code is compared with the work order and the result is logged.
