Defect and form inspection of pipette tips
Pipette tips in a carrier arrive between opposing camera and backlight pairs. Telecentric silhouettes are used to measure tip direction, opening and flash; the carrier with a bent tip is rejected by a pusher.
Tip angle and opening are sent to the PLC; the fixture carrying a bent tip is sent to the reject path, and the enlarged silhouette is recorded on the operator display.

Need
Thin transparent tips can disappear depending on the lighting direction. A regular contour in one view can hide bending along another axis; the opening and flash occupy the same small region.
Solution approach
Telecentric camera and backlight pairs around the carrier capture orthogonal silhouettes. Edges are matched to the carrier reference; tip axis, opening and contour protrusion are measured by rules. A magnified tip image shows the deviation region on screen.
Process steps
- 01
Position
The carrier enters the measurement opening.
- 02
Silhouette
Telecentric images are captured from orthogonal axes.
- 03
Form measurement
The tip axis and opening are located.
- 04
Reject
The bent-tip carrier is removed by the pusher.
