DataMatrix reading on lubricant canisters and bottles
While canisters and bottles run on the same line, a fixed-mount reader decodes the DataMatrix on each label on the fly. The content is logged and the print quality is graded; a product that cannot be read is diverted to a side lane.
Decoded content, illustrative quality grade and contrast appear on the display. Readable codes are logged; the rotating flap directs unreadable products to the side lane.

Need
Canister and bottle codes arrive at different positions and sizes. Glossy labels, low print contrast and modules erased by abrasion can interrupt the finder pattern.
Solution approach
The belt-side reader views the code obliquely and its own lighting creates print-to-background contrast. The enlarged code shows the finder pattern and damaged region; decoded content and an illustrative quality grade are evaluated together.
Process steps
- 01
Infeed
Canisters and bottles approach the reader in mixed order.
- 02
Read
The angled reader images the code on the fly with its own light.
- 03
Grade
Finder pattern and modules are decoded; contrast is measured and a grade is assigned.
- 04
Decide
The content is logged; for an unreadable code the diverter arm opens.
