Cap inspection on lubricant canisters and bottles
The neck area is imaged from the side against a backlight. In the silhouette the cap is checked for presence, and a line fitted to its top edge gives height and tilt. A product with a skewed or missing cap is removed from the line.
Tilt and height difference appear on the display and are compared with the recipe tolerance window. The skew-capped canister is pushed into the reject chute; the stack light indicates NG.

Need
Cap ribs and reflections obscure the top edge under front lighting. Different neck heights and laterally offset caps require a shared gauging reference.
Solution approach
A neck-height backlight silhouettes the cap for the opposing telecentric camera. A line fitted to the top edge is compared with the nominal line; illustrative tilt and height difference are shown with gauging overlays.
Process steps
- 01
Infeed
Capped bottles and canisters approach the station.
- 02
Trigger
The photo-sensor sees the product and triggers the camera.
- 03
Silhouette
The backlight strobes; the neck and cap silhouette is captured.
- 04
Measure
A line is fitted to the cap top edge; tilt and height deviation are measured.
- 05
Decide
The measurements are compared with the tolerances in the product recipe.
