Particle size distribution measurement on aggregate conveyors
Crushed stone flowing on an inclined belt is scanned by a laser profile sensor. A distribution is built from equivalent diameters of particles segmented in the height map; an oversize or fines fraction above its limit triggers a crusher-adjustment warning.
Particle distribution and oversize fraction are monitored on the operator display; a limit exceedance is sent to the stack light and line control to request review of the crusher setting.

Need
Stones overlap, cast shadows and vary the belt load. Adjacent particles may appear merged in a colour image; the height of the bed affects particle boundaries.
Solution approach
A gantry-mounted 3D sensor scans the belt with transverse laser profiles. Peaks and boundaries are separated in the height map built from belt travel; equivalent diameters of visible particles are calculated to assess the distribution and oversize fraction.
Process steps
- 01
Infeed
Crushed stone advances to the sensor on the inclined belt.
- 02
Acquire
Transverse laser profiles are combined with belt travel.
- 03
Analyse
Visible particle boundaries and equivalent diameter distribution are calculated.
- 04
Decide
The oversize fraction is compared with its limit; a warning is sent to line control.
