Crack and dimension inspection of bricks and roof tiles

Solution concept

Roof tiles from the kiln exit are imaged in a single file on the belt. Low-angle light reveals crack shadows; laser profiling then measures warpage and thickness, and a non-conforming tile is removed by a pusher.

Information delivered

Crack location and profile deviation appear on the operator display; line control tracks the non-conforming tile position and sends a reject command to the pusher.

Need

The rough fired-clay surface and corrugations produce dark lines resembling cracks. Surface angle changes on a warped tile; a top image alone does not show thickness deviation.

Solution approach

An overhead camera images the surface using two opposing low-angle bar lights; thin shadow lines departing from the corrugation direction are measured as crack candidates. The next 3D sensor profile is compared with nominal corrugation shape to assess warpage and dimensional deviation.

Process steps

  1. 01

    Infeed

Tiles arrive in a single file from the kiln-car unloading belt.

  2. 02

    Acquire

The overhead camera acquires the crack image; the next sensor extracts a laser profile.

  3. 03

    Analyse

The crack line and profile deviation from nominal shape are measured.

  4. 04

    Decide

A cracked or warped tile is pushed into the reject bin.
