Edge offset measurement on wound coils
The side face of a horizontal-axis steel coil on a coil car is scanned by a laser profiler. Axial positions of winding layers are derived by radius; telescopic winding and a protruding layer feed the coiler-adjustment decision.
Maximum offset and the radius of the protruding layer enter the coil record; an NG coil prompts coiler adjustment and rewinding review.

Need
Numerous thin layer edges on the coil side face produce different reflections. Coil and car tilt can make axial offset relative to a fixed plane appear larger than it is.
Solution approach
The side profiler laser line crosses layer edges along the radius. A side-face reference is derived from the coil axis and inner layers. Axial difference at each layer is mapped to radius; layers exceeding limit lines are marked on the offset curve.
