Edge and corner crack inspection on continuously cast slabs
As a hot slab travels on rollers, a protected overhead profiler and side line camera scan its edge. Discontinuities in the cross-view image and height map are registered to the same coordinates; a corner tear feeds the quality and grinding decision.
The edge finding and slab coordinates enter the quality record; the marked corner is shown on the operator display for grinding or further review.

Need
Hot-surface radiation and scale create dark regions resembling cracks. A corner tear appears differently on upper and side faces; the two views must be registered.
Solution approach
A protected side line camera images the edge under oblique light; an overhead laser profiler samples corner height. Both data streams are registered by line position. A dark line accompanied by geometric collapse is isolated by rule-based analysis.
Process steps
- 01
Rollers
The slab enters the scanning station.
- 02
Protect
Sensors behind the shields face the edge.
- 03
Scan
Side images and upper sections accumulate.
- 04
Register
Discontinuities in both views are registered.
- 05
Quality
The torn corner enters the quality record.
