Closure orientation check (bottles, shampoo, detergent)
On pump, trigger or flip-top closures the direction of the spout is measured in a top-view image as an angle relative to the axis of the bottle body. A closure turned beyond tolerance is flagged and a diverter flap moves the bottle to the reject conveyor.
Body axis and closure angle are written to the line PLC for every bottle; a bottle outside tolerance is diverted to the reject conveyor by the flap. The angle distribution is shown on the operator display and feeds back to the capper setting.

Need
Closure orientation only makes sense relative to the body axis, and the bottle itself arrives rotated a few degrees on the belt. The oval body and the pump head share similar light tones, the curved shoulder reflects, and spout height varies with bottle type.
Solution approach
A ring-lit smart camera looks straight down: the oval body outline is fitted with an ellipse whose long axis becomes the body axis, and the pump spout is found as a separate pattern. The angle between the two directions is measured and compared with the ±12° tolerance sector, so the bottle's own rotation does not affect the result.
Process steps
- 01
Infeed
Pump bottles arrive with the label face to the front.
- 02
Acquire
The photo-sensor triggers and the ring-lit camera images the closure from above.
- 03
Angle
An ellipse is fitted to the body outline; the spout direction is measured against the body axis.
- 04
Decide
The measured angle is compared with the ±12° tolerance sector.
