Braille embossing verification on pharmaceutical cartons
The flat carton passes under oblique lighting and a profile sensor before folding. Embossed dot presence, position and height are measured, and the dot pattern is compared with the expected text.
The dot pattern and lowest embossing height are sent to the PLC and operator display; a carton with a missing dot is removed by the pusher before folding.

Need
Embossing has the same colour as the print and may disappear under diffuse top lighting. Carton curvature shifts the height reference, while a print spot can resemble a real dot.
Solution approach
Low-angle bar lighting casts shadows at dot edges so the overhead camera can locate them. A laser profile sensor measures embossing height relative to the carton plane. The dot matrix is compared with the expected pattern and text.
Process steps
- 01
Infeed
The flat carton enters the inspection region.
- 02
Image and profile
An obliquely lit image and height profile are acquired.
- 03
Dot matching
Dots are compared with expected positions and heights.
- 04
Decide
The carton with a missing dot is removed by the pusher.
