IV bag visual inspection
The hanging bag stops in front of a large backlight and four regions are evaluated separately in one image: particles in the liquid, continuity of the perimeter seal, presence of the port closures and position of the print. A non-conforming bag is removed from the line.
The result of the four regions and the narrowest seal width are logged per bag; a non-conforming bag is released from the hook into the reject bin at the next step, and the region results are shown on the operator display.

Need
The bag is soft and transparent: it swings on its hook, its shape differs from bag to bag and the liquid surface is confused with creases. The seal line is thin, print and liquid overlap in the same image, and the port closure is small and outside the liquid region.
Solution approach
When the overhead line stops the swing is allowed to settle, then the large backlight strobes and the bag is captured as a silhouette in one frame. The image is split into four regions: the liquid area is scanned for particles, the perimeter seal is traced and its narrowest width measured, the port region is checked for closures and the print region for text position. The four results are merged.
Process steps
- 01
Infeed
The overhead line indexes one step; the bag arrives in front of the backlight.
- 02
Acquire
Once the swing has settled the backlight strobes and the bag is imaged.
- 03
Liquid & seal
The liquid region is searched for particles; the perimeter seal is traced along its contour.
- 04
Ports & print
Presence of the port closures and position of the print field are checked.
- 05
Decide
The results of the four regions are combined.
