Crack and chip detection on syringe flanges
A syringe in a carrier arrives in front of a camera at flange height. Backlit and dark-field images are evaluated together; a crack mask is displayed and the defective carrier is diverted to the reject path.
The defect mask and area are shown on the operator display; the decision matched to the carrier identity is sent to the PLC and the syringe with a cracked flange is diverted to the reject path.

Need
Curves and mould marks on the clear flange create bright lines. A fine crack can disappear under ordinary lighting, while a chipped flange edge can resemble normal geometry.
Solution approach
A camera facing the flange captures its edge silhouette with backlighting and crack scattering with low-angle light. Deep learning masks the defect region; the mask and edge continuity are assessed together to drive the reject diverter.
Process steps
- 01
Position
The carrier brings the flange onto the camera axis.
- 02
Acquire
Silhouette and crack scattering are imaged.
- 03
Mask
The flange crack region is marked.
- 04
Sort
The defective carrier is diverted to the reject path.
