Helicopter landing guidance and positioning system
Deck cameras track the markers under the helicopter; lateral offset, height and heading are computed continuously. The measured pose is compared with the landing window and the correction direction is displayed.
Illustrative pose and offset direction appear on the operator display. The OK/NG state of the landing-window comparison is shown simultaneously by the scene stack light.

Need
The angle and apparent scale of underbody markers change during approach. Occlusion between the airframe and skids makes pose difficult to interpret from a single view.
Solution approach
Two cameras at opposite deck corners observe the underbody markers from different viewpoints. Marker regions are framed on screen; the illustrative pose is shown on the deck plan with the landing window and offset vector.
Process steps
- 01
Approach
The helicopter approaches the deck; the cameras scan the tracking volume.
- 02
Marker lock
Two cameras acquire the markers under the airframe and lock on.
- 03
Pose
Lateral offset, height and heading are computed relative to the touchdown point.
- 04
Guidance
The offset vector is displayed and the helicopter is guided into the landing window.
- 05
Touchdown
Descent continues while the pose stays inside the window; tracking runs until contact.
