High-speed camera analysis in munition detonation tests
The test event is recorded by a high-speed camera behind a protective barrier. In every frame the front radius is measured against a scaled backdrop; the expansion curve is extracted and compared with the reference band.
Time, radius and velocity of every frame are written to the test record; the expansion curve is shown on the analysis display together with the reference band. A record that leaves the band is flagged NG and set aside for review.

Need
The event is over within milliseconds; the front travels a visible distance between two frames and smears under a long exposure. The flash saturates the sensor and smoke hides the edge, while for safety the camera has to look from behind a barrier.
Solution approach
The camera looks perpendicular to the expansion plane from behind a protective window. The striped scale board converts pixels into length and makes the passing front stand out. Recording is synchronised with the trigger signal; in every frame the front edge is located, its radius is measured from the centre and paired with the frame time to build the expansion curve.
Process steps

Arm
The sample is in place; the camera waits for the trigger while the countdown runs.
- 02
Trigger
The event is recorded at a high frame rate, synchronised with the trigger signal.
- 03
Frame gauging
In each frame the front edge is located and its radius is measured.
- 04
Decide
The expansion curve is compared with the reference band.
