Colour shade measurement and grouping of fabric rolls
Fabric is imaged in an illuminated cabinet while rewinding on the inspection machine. Edge-to-centre and head-to-tail colour differences are compared with the reference shade; the shade group is written to the roll label.
The roll shade group and colour-difference profile are linked to the production record. The group is printed on the roll label; an out-of-range difference alerts the operator.

Need
Weave direction, wrinkles and ambient light change the apparent shade. Edge-to-centre and head-to-tail differences must be compared under the same light and reference.
Solution approach
A calibrated overhead colour camera views fabric in a diffuse cabinet with fixed illumination conditions. Colour differences of edge-centre-edge regions are calculated against the reference; metre position supports head-to-tail comparison and group boundaries are validated with samples.
Process steps
- 01
Rewind
Fabric passes through the inspection cabinet.
- 02
Reference light
Diffuse light limits ambient effects.
- 03
Colour image
Colour regions are captured across the width.
- 04
Shade difference
Edges, centre and roll positions are compared.
- 05
Group label
The shade group is written to the winder label.
