Edge burr measurement after electrode slitting
The cut edge of the electrode strip leaving the slitting knives is scanned by a laser profile sensor. Protrusions rising above the adjacent foil plane are measured; the strip region containing an out-of-limit burr is flagged with its position for separation.
Burr height and strip position go to the PLC; the non-conforming region enters the separation record and is marked on the operator display.

Need
Small protrusions at the slit edge of thin foil blend into the reflections of the shiny surface. Flutter of the strip makes burr height difficult to measure against a fixed plane.
Solution approach
The profile sensor views the cut edge from above at a slight tilt; the laser line crosses the edge and the adjacent flat foil in the same cross-section. A reference plane is fitted to the flat foil; the height of the local protrusion above this plane and its extent along the strip are extracted, and the region to be separated is located by encoder position.
Process steps
- 01
Web flow
The electrode strip leaves the slitting knives and runs through the inspection span.
- 02
Scan
The profile sensor scans the cut edge together with the adjacent flat foil.
- 03
Measure
The height and extent of the protrusion above the foil plane are calculated.
- 04
Decide
The strip region containing the burr is flagged and reported to the PLC for separation.
