Panel type recognition on the paint-shop hanger line
A panel arriving on the overhead conveyor is imaged as a silhouette against a backlight. Outline and cut-outs are matched to the stored type templates; the paint program follows the recognised type and an unmatched hanger is flagged.
The paint program of the recognised type is sent to the booth controller with the hanger number; for an unrecognised hanger no program is sent and the warning is shown on the stack light and the operator display.

Need
The panel swings on its hanger and its height and angle change from hanger to hanger; bare sheet before primer is matt and low in contrast. Types of similar size differ only in their cut-out pattern, and a panel hung askew can match every type wrongly.
Solution approach
A backlight wall turns the panel into a high-contrast silhouette and a hanger photo-sensor triggers the image. Outline and cut-outs are extracted and scored against the type templates with position-independent contour matching. If the match score stays below the threshold no type is assigned and the hanger passes unpainted.
Process steps
- 01
Approach
The panel on its hanger approaches the station at constant speed and the photo-sensor detects it.
- 02
Silhouette
The backlight strobes and the panel silhouette is captured.
- 03
Matching
Outline and cut-outs are extracted and compared with the type templates.
- 04
Program
The paint program of the recognised type is sent to the booth.
