3D flush & gap measurement on refrigerator and oven doors
A laser profile sensor travels on an axis along the seam between door and cabinet. At each measuring point gap and flush are computed from the cross-section profile, and a point outside tolerance is reported with its position.
The gap and flush value of every point is stored with the product ID; an out-of-tolerance point is flagged on the stack light and the display and reported to the door adjustment station together with the correction direction.

Need
Door and cabinet surfaces are bright stainless steel or paint; the seam is narrow, deep and shadowed. A two-dimensional image does not show the flush offset, and the measurement has to capture the sag of the door under its own weight at several points along the edge.
Solution approach
A laser profile sensor travels on a vertical axis and its laser line crosses the seam. At each point the cabinet edge and the door edge are found in the cross-section profile; the horizontal distance between the two edges gives the gap and the height difference gives the flush. Measuring several points along the door reveals the sag trend.
Process steps
- 01
Positioning
The sensor moves on its axis to the first measuring point.
- 02
Laser profile
The laser line crosses the seam and the cross-section profile is acquired.
- 03
Measure
Gap and flush are computed from the edges in the profile.
- 04
Decide
All points are compared with the tolerance and the worst one is reported.
