3D coplanarity measurement of connector pin tips
Two connector pin rows are scanned by laser profiling. Pin tips are located against a common reference plane; a pin below the plane band is shown with a measurement arrow and finding ring before assembly is held.
Per-pin height, plane deviation and worst-tip index are recorded. The PLC accepts assembly passage or holds the part; the reference-plane definition is validated against the drawing.

Need
Pins at the same image location can have different heights. Fixture tilt can appear as coplanarity error; pin tips must be evaluated against a common geometric reference.
Solution approach
A laser profiler scans both pin rows. Tip candidates are located in geometric regions, aligned to the part reference and measured relative to the reference plane. The pin index and deviation outside an illustrative plane band are highlighted.
Process steps
- 01
Locate
The connector enters the fixed nest.
- 02
Reference and trigger
Part reference and scan direction are defined.
- 03
Sample
Pin tips are sampled sequentially from the 3D profile.
- 04
Geometric analysis
Tips are referenced to the plane and the lowest pin is located.
- 05
Tolerance and PLC
The coplanarity limit determines the PLC assembly decision.
