Inline width and edge measurement on flat wire
Flat wire travels under tension on the drawing line while a side camera captures its width silhouette against a backlight. The spacing between opposite edges is measured; narrowing and edge deviation are linked to the defective-length record.
The width curve and length position of the narrowed region are reported to the PLC; the marked silhouette is stored for winding or subsequent separation.

Need
Reflective flat-wire edges produce reflections under front lighting. Twist changes the apparent width; local narrowing must be separated from movement under tension.
Solution approach
A side telecentric camera views the wide face as a silhouette against an opposing backlight. Top-to-bottom edge spacing is calibrated; local narrowing and edge continuity are assessed. The camera arrangement and wire guidance require sample verification.
Process steps
- 01
Tensioned travel
The flat wire passes through guide rollers.
- 02
Silhouette
The backlight forms a silhouette of the wide face.
- 03
Edge tracking
Top and bottom edges are tracked along the wire.
- 04
Width
Opposite-edge spacing is compared with the reference.
- 05
Length record
The narrowed region is reported to the PLC.
