Smart label reading and OCR-based automatic routing of parts-supply pallets
As the pallet travels down the line a wide-field camera finds every label on the load face in a single image; the part number is read by OCR and the codes are decoded. If the labels match each other and the shipping record, the pallet is routed to its destination lane.
Read and matching label counts appear on the display; a matching pallet transfers to the destination gate, while a mixed load continues on the main line towards manual inspection.

Need
Labels occupy different heights on shifted cartons; a single different part number creates a mixed load. Labels need comparison with each other as well as successful reading.
Solution approach
A wide-field camera views the load face obliquely from above; a bar light illuminates labels and a photo-sensor triggers capture. Four label regions are read in sequence and OCR text and codes are compared with the shipping record. The display identifies the mismatched carton and routing follows the pallet.
Process steps
- 01
Infeed
The pallet approaches the reading station on the roller line.
- 02
Acquire
The photo-sensor triggers and the whole load face is captured in one frame.
- 03
OCR
The labels are located; part numbers and codes are read one after another.
- 04
Match
The values read are compared with each other and with the shipping record.
- 05
Routing
The transfer at the junction sends the pallet to the lane named on the label.
