3D carton deformation deviation from nominal volume
Top and side carton faces are scanned by two laser-profile views. The point cloud is aligned to a nominal box to show inward deformation and volume deviation. An accepted carton advances while a deformed carton stops for review.
Visible-surface deformation, nominal-model difference and volume assumption are stored with the part. The PLC holds a deformed carton for review; missing surfaces or uncertain models are not reported as a complete volume result.

Need
Overall carton dimensions can remain unchanged while one face collapses inward. A single top silhouette cannot show volume loss; unseen faces and the nominal box reference must be addressed in the measurement scope.
Solution approach
Top and side laser heads collect profiles at controlled positions. Calibrated profiles are aligned to a nominal box in a common frame and visible-surface distances form a deformation map. Volume calculation uses a closable surface model and an explicit reference assumption.
Process steps
- 01
Locate
The carton stops at the scan position on the roller line.
- 02
Reference and trigger
Top and side heads are linked to the common reference.
- 03
Sample
Profiles from both views form a common point cloud.
- 04
Geometric analysis
Surface difference and nominal-model volume deviation are calculated.
- 05
Tolerance and PLC
An accepted carton advances and a deformed carton is held by the PLC.
