Volume and outer dimension measurement of parcels
Parcels pass through the measuring gate without stopping while an overhead depth camera captures a height map of the parcel. Length, width, height and volume are computed from the enclosing box fitted to the map, and the result feeds shipping-box selection and routing.
Dimensions and volume are sent to the warehouse management system and the line PLC, and the matching shipping-box class is selected. A parcel exceeding the line limit is pushed to the manual handling lane.

Need
Parcels arrive at random angles and in different sizes; dark, glossy or taped surfaces leave gaps in the depth data. A bulging flap and the motion of the belt itself can make the parcel measure larger than it is.
Solution approach
A downward-looking stereo or time-of-flight (ToF) camera produces a height map calibrated to the belt plane. Points above belt level are segmented as the parcel, a minimum-area enclosing box is fitted and its edges are measured; height is taken from the top surface to the belt plane. Trigger and belt-speed data correct the map along the direction of travel.
Process steps
- 01
Infeed
Parcels approach the gate spaced apart and at random angles.
- 02
Depth image
The photo-sensor triggers and the depth camera captures the height map.
- 03
Dimensions
An enclosing box is fitted to the map; length, width and height are measured.
- 04
Decide
Volume is computed and the box class selected; an out-of-limit parcel is diverted.
