Robotic rear-view mirror mounting and primer coverage check

Application example

The robot applies primer to the mirror zone of the windshield. In an image taken under UV light, coverage of the target area is measured cell by cell; a void is touched up, and once the coverage threshold is met the mirror is placed.

Information delivered

Coverage and void maps are sent to the operator display. NG initiates the robot touch-up pass; OK on the second inspection releases mirror installation.

Need

A thin primer band on the dark glass frit has low contrast under normal lighting. Curvature and reflections can hide small coverage voids or an incomplete pass.

Solution approach

An overhead camera and a UV ring light are used: under UV the tracer additive in the primer fluoresces while the dark frit stays dark. The target area is divided into cells; the coverage void is marked on the map and the same area is checked again after the robot touch-up.

Process steps

  1. 01

    Primer

The robot wipes primer bands onto the mirror zone with the applicator.

  2. 02

    UV image

The UV light strobes; the primer fluoresces and the camera images the zone.

  3. 03

    Coverage

The target area is split into cells; covered ratio and void area are measured.

  4. 04

    Mirror mount

The robot picks the mirror from its nest and presses it onto the primed zone.
