Tobacco beetle detection system
A pheromone sticky trap in the warehouse is imaged at regular intervals by its own camera. Newly caught beetles are found by comparison with the previous image and counted; the count trend is monitored against an alert level.
Period count and total are written to the record system with the warehouse zone; when the alert level is exceeded the beacon lights, an alert is sent for that zone and a sheet change is scheduled.

Need
The beetle is a few millimetres long and must be told apart from dust, crumbs and old beetles on the sticky sheet; warehouse light varies, and if counting is not done regularly the increase is noticed late.
Solution approach
A ring-lit smart camera looking squarely at each trap takes an image at regular periods in the same pose, independent of ambient light. The new image is subtracted from the previous period's image; only the difference regions become candidates, and those passing a size and shape filter are counted as beetles. The period count is added to the trend chart and compared with the alert level.
Process steps
- 01
Capture
The pheromone sticky trap collects beetles in the warehouse.
- 02
Acquire
The camera images the trap under its own light.
- 03
Count
New beetles are found by differencing against the previous period's image and counted in sequence.
- 04
Trend
The period count is added to the chart and compared with the alert level.
