Presence and position check of assembly holes in furniture panels

Need

On a white melamine surface the hole rim is glossy and low in contrast, and chip residue can make a hole look filled. Edge holes lie on a narrow face seen from the side, and the recipe changes from panel to panel, so every panel must be matched against its own hole pattern.

Solution approach

The panel is stopped; the top camera under a diffuse ring light sees the whole face in one frame and the side camera with a bar light takes the edge face. Dark circular regions are segmented as holes and their centre and diameter are measured. They are matched against the hole list of the recipe called by the panel code; missing, extra or shifted holes outside tolerance are reported separately.

Process steps

   Stop

   The panel is stopped under the camera at the drilling machine outlet.

   Acquire

   The top camera images the face holes, the side camera the edge holes.

   Recipe

   The holes found are matched with the expected holes of the recipe by count and position.

   Decide

   A complete panel moves on; a panel with a missing hole is taken to a separate stack by the robot.
