Seal band width and continuity measurement on flexible pouches
After leaving the sealing jaws, the pouch is imaged by an overhead camera under directional light. Width and gaps are measured along the relief edges; a pouch with a narrow seal band is removed by a pusher.
Band width and gap position are sent to the PLC; a non-conforming pouch is removed by the pusher and the measurement is shown on the operator display.

Need
Seal relief has weak contrast on glossy flexible film. Pouch tilt and reflections can make a narrow band or local gap resemble a normal surface fold.
Solution approach
An overhead camera views the seal band with oblique bar lights from both sides. The two boundaries enhanced by directional reflection are extracted; local width and continuity are compared relative to the pouch edge.
Process steps
- 01
Positioning
The pouch advances from the sealing jaws to the inspection span.
- 02
Acquire
Directional lighting makes the band relief visible.
- 03
Analyse
The two band boundaries and local width are extracted.
- 04
Decide
The pouch with a narrow band is removed by the reject pusher.
