Print quality verification of barcodes and 2D codes
The label strip advances from the printer to a fixed reader with controlled illumination. Symbol contrast and print gaps are evaluated in a calibrated image; a report is created for a defective label and the printer line is stopped.
The symbol evaluation is written to the quality report; a print gap is shown on the operator display and the PLC stops the printer line at the defective label.

Need
Even a readable code can contain print gaps or low contrast. Label gloss and varying illumination can make an actual print defect resemble an imaging effect.
Solution approach
A fixed reader captures an image calibrated with controlled diffuse light and a reference area. Contrast and missing print regions along barcode bars and two-dimensional symbol cells are evaluated to create a quality record.
Process steps
- 01
Positioning
The label strip leaves the printer for the reading span.
- 02
Acquire
The reference and code are imaged under controlled lighting.
- 03
Analyse
Contrast and print gaps are measured in the symbol regions.
- 04
Decide
The print gap is reported; the printer line is stopped.
