Insulation fault test on cable cross-sections
A clean cross-section is cut from the cable and imaged square-on under a ring light. Conductor and insulation contours are found on every core; wall thickness is measured all the way round and the thinnest point is compared with the lower limit.
The thinnest point, eccentricity and measured-core count appear on the screen and HUD; a section below the wall-thickness lower limit is marked NG and the tower signals the decision.

Need
An angled or crushed cut face distorts the insulation contour; a small conductor offset can cause local thinning even when average wall thickness appears normal.
Solution approach
A guide holds the cable while a guillotine exposes a fresh face. A camera normal to the section and a ring light reveal its contours; conductor-to-insulation distance is sampled around each core. The display combines the section, measurement line and thickness profile.
Process steps
- 01
Cut
The cable is advanced; the guillotine cuts off a slice and exposes a fresh face.
- 02
Acquire
The ring light strobes; conductor and insulation contours are extracted.
- 03
Wall thickness
On each core the distance between the two contours is scanned around the circumference.
- 04
Decide
The thinnest point and the concentricity are compared with the limits.
