Seal continuity inspection on tray sealing rims
The rim of a tray leaving the sealing press is imaged by an overhead thermal camera. Continuity and distribution of the perimeter heat trace are checked; a tray with a cold interruption is diverted into the inspection channel.
Interruption position and heat-trace distribution are sent to the PLC and operator display. A non-conforming tray is diverted into the inspection channel; the image is recorded for review.

Need
Film reflections can obscure the seal trace in visible light. Corner geometry and cooling after the press affect separation of a continuous heat trace from a cold gap.
Solution approach
An overhead thermal camera close to the press exit captures the tray rim in one view. Temperature and trace width are evaluated along a perimeter mask aligned to the tray edge; a cold interruption is marked in the image and in an unwrapped rim graph.
Process steps
- 01
Infeed
The product is carried into the inspection station.
- 02
Trigger
The photo-sensor reports the product position.
- 03
Acquire
The tray rim is thermally imaged at the press exit.
- 04
Analyse
Temperature and trace continuity are checked within the perimeter mask.
- 05
Decision and separation
The result is sent to the display and PLC; a non-conforming product is separated.
