Anomaly and packaging inspection on an ice-cream production line
Ice-cream bars are imaged from above under a dome light; breakage, double product, sauce overflow and nut distribution are checked. Faulty product is removed before wrapping; on the pack a second camera checks the end seals and the date code.
Product defects are sent to flap control and the item drops into the bin before wrapping. Seal and code results for a conforming pack appear on the display; product and pack records are matched.

Need
Glossy coating, nut pieces and sauce overflow create similar light patterns. Double products and broken contours are sought before wrapping, while end seals are inspected on the closed pack.
Solution approach
Dome light diffuses reflections from glossy products; contours, width and nut count are compared in the top view. The flap opens for a non-conforming product. After wrapping, a second camera checks both end seals and the code area in separate ROIs.
Process steps
- 01
Acquire
The dome light strobes and the glossy coated product is imaged without glare.
- 02
Anomaly
Shape, width and nut count are measured; a product that deviates is flagged.
- 03
Reject
The flap under the faulty product opens and the product drops into the bin.
- 04
Wrapping
Conforming product enters the wrapping machine and leaves it wrapped.
- 05
Pack check
A second camera checks the end seals and the printed date code.
