Gap and overlap measurement at tyre ply splices
The uncured rubber ply rotates on a drum while a fixed profile sensor scans the splice. Gap, overlap and folded ends are distinguished in the height map; a splice defect sends a rework signal to drum control.
Splice gap and height deviation go to drum control. A rework signal and marked section are displayed to the operator for a non-conforming splice.

Need
The splice boundary has weak visual contrast on black uncured rubber. Flexible ends can create gaps, overlaps or folds; drum curvature affects measured height.
Solution approach
An overhead profile sensor collects sections across the splice on the drum. The curved drum reference is removed; depressed gaps and raised overlap regions are measured along the splice boundaries.
Process steps
- 01
Building
The uncured ply is wrapped onto the drum.
- 02
Splice scan
The profile sensor tracks the splice passing underneath.
- 03
Map
Drum curvature is removed to form the splice map.
- 04
Geometry
The gap and raised end region are measured.
- 05
Rework
The splice defect is reported to drum control.
