Reading embossed codes and text on tyre sidewalls
The tyre is positioned on a rotary table; a profile sensor facing the sidewall builds a height image of the embossed code. Characters are read and compared with the expected code format; an unreadable identity is routed for separate assessment.
The read identity is linked to the test record. If reading fails, the PLC turns the routing flap towards separate assessment and presents the image to the operator.

Need
Embossed characters on black rubber provide little colour contrast. The curved sidewall and local height changes make character boundaries difficult to separate.
Solution approach
An oblique profile sensor collects height sections during rotation. The curved background is removed, raised characters are read by OCR and code format is verified; sample feasibility work is required to establish readability.
Process steps
- 01
Positioning
The tyre is seated on the rotary table.
- 02
Scan
The profile sensor acquires sections across the code.
- 03
Height image
Sidewall curvature is removed and characters are separated.
- 04
Read
The OCR result is compared with the expected identity format.
- 05
Route
An unreadable tyre goes to separate assessment.
