Surface defect inspection on black rubber sheet
As the rubber sheet travels between rollers, an overhead line-scan camera scans the surface under oblique lighting. Shape and texture deviations are marked; the defect position is written to a length-based rejection map.
The defect mask and length position are stored in the rejection map; region data is sent to the PLC for subsequent cutting or separation.

Need
Black sheet absorbs light, so surface depressions and low-contrast marks can disappear. Waviness between rollers also changes its appearance.
Solution approach
The overhead line-scan camera works with an oblique bar light crossing the sheet width. Edge and shadow changes from directional lighting are compared with a local texture reference; masks are matched to travel position.
Process steps

The sheet travels between rollers.
- 02
Line image
Oblique light reveals surface boundaries.
- 03

The image is compared with a local texture reference.
- 04
Mask
The deviation region is marked in the image.
- 05
