Lip, flash and dimension check on seals and O-rings
The seal is imaged from above on an indexed table; a low-angle ring light reveals the contact lip. Edge analysis adapted to the flexible contour distinguishes flash, breaks and diameter deviation; a non-conforming part is moved into the rejection pocket.
Lip diameter and edge deviation are sent to the line PLC; a non-conforming seal is pushed into the rejection pocket and the marked image is recorded.

Need
The flexible seal lip can change shape with placement. Small flash or breaks along the black edge can be confused with surface reflections.
Solution approach
The overhead camera views the contact edge illuminated by a low-angle ring light. A circular reference is adapted to the flexible contour; outward flash, inward breaks and diameter changes are separated as edge deviations.
Process steps
- 01
Indexing
The seal reaches the imaging nest.
- 02
Illumination
The ring light illuminates the contact lip.
- 03
Contour
An adapted reference contour is extracted.
- 04
Deviation
Flash, breaks and diameter are measured.
- 05
Reject
The seal with an edge defect is pushed into the rejection pocket.
