3D flush & gap measurement and fit verification on side doors and trunk lid
Laser profile sensors project a line across the door and trunk seams. Gap and flush between the two panels are computed from the cross-section profile; each point is compared with its tolerance window.
Gap and flush for each point are sent to the operator display with a cross-section graph. The out-of-tolerance trunk point produces an NG signal and an adjustment record.

Need
Curved door and trunk edges and glossy paint make the two seam boundaries difficult to separate. An oblique sensor pose changes both the gap and flush readings.
Solution approach
The robot-mounted profiler is positioned square to the door seam; the fixed sensor is mounted on a post so that it faces the trunk joint normal to the surface. The laser line crosses the seam; the two panel edges and the surface reference are located in the cross-section profile, and gap and flush are measured separately.
Process steps
- 01
Position
The sensor moves to the measuring point, square to the seam.
- 02
Laser profile
The laser line falls across the seam and the cross-section is captured.
- 03
Gap & flush
Panel edges are located in the profile; gap and flush are measured.
- 04
Tolerance
The values are compared with the tolerance window for that point.
