Foreign object detection inside the press die
Between strokes, while the ram is up, cameras image the open die and compare it with the empty-die reference. If a scrap piece is left in the die, the next stroke is not released.
Object region and area are sent to the operator display. A clear die releases the stroke; scrap inhibits the enable signal, holds the ram up and sets the stack light to NG.

Need
Reflective tool steel, cavities and guide pins can hide small scraps. The ram and the outgoing part block the view, so the comparison is possible only with the die open, in the short interval between two strokes.
Solution approach
Two oblique cameras attached to the columns image the open die from different directions with ring-light strobes. Die edges are aligned to the reference; local differences inside the cavity are scanned and the scrap region is outlined.
Process steps
- 01
Stroke
The blank is fed into the die; the ram forms the part and returns.
- 02
Part out
The formed part is lifted from the die onto the exit conveyor.
- 03
Die image
The lights strobe and two cameras image the open die.
- 04
Compare
The image is compared region by region with the empty-die reference.
- 05
Press enable
If the die is clear, the next stroke is released.
