Paint inspection of car bodies and finished vehicles
The painted body travels through a tunnel of light arches that forms a stripe pattern. Cameras track distortions of the stripes reflected on the glossy surface; paint defects such as dirt, craters and runs are marked with their position on the body.
Zone code, defect count and defect size appear on the body map on the operator display; the stack light and the line interface report the rework routing decision.

Need
Glossy paint reflects its surroundings like a mirror; body curvature naturally bends the stripe pattern. Small craters and dirt marks must be separated from this normal reflection change.
Solution approach
Stripe-light arches form a fixed reflection pattern on the glossy paint; as the body advances, the stripe edges sweep over every point of the surface and a dirt particle or crater bends the edge locally. Top and side cameras observe the hood, door and roof; a second side view at the exit covers the door region again. Zone results are combined on the body map.
Process steps
- 01
Tunnel entry
The painted body enters the light tunnel at constant speed.
- 02
Stripe light
The stripe pattern of the light arches reflects off the paint into the cameras.
- 03
Defect search
Hood, door and roof zones are searched for local distortions in the reflection.
- 04
Decide
Zone results are combined on the body map.
