Robotic brake disc assembly and part verification
A camera finds the centre of the brake disc and the angle of its bolt pattern, and verifies the type. The robot picks the correct disc, aligns the pattern to the studs and seats it on the hub; a second camera checks seating and pattern alignment.
The disc centre and pattern angle are sent to the robot controller as the pick offset; a wrong type gets no pick release and leaves the line. After assembly the measured centre offset and the seating result are written to the part record and shown on the operator display and the stack light.

Need
Discs of one diameter can have different bolt patterns, so the outer circle cannot tell the type. The disc stops at a random angle: unless its holes line up with the studs it will not seat on the hub and rests on top of them. The machined face is mirror-like, so hole edges can be lost in glare.
Solution approach
A camera looks straight down on the pick position; under ring light the machined face is bright, holes dark. The outer circle gives the centre, the holes give pattern and angle; a disc off the nominal pattern is not picked. With these offsets the robot picks the disc, turns the pattern onto the studs and seats it. A second camera above the hub measures that each stud is concentric with its hole.
Process steps
- 01
Infeed
The disc arrives at the pick position on the roller line and stops.
- 02
Locate & type
Outer circle and bolt holes are found; centre, angle and part type are derived.
- 03
Robot pick
The robot moves to the position given by the camera and picks the disc by vacuum.
- 04
Assemble
The disc is rotated so that its bolt pattern meets the studs and is seated on the hub.
- 05
Verify
The second camera checks that the studs pass concentrically through the holes and the disc is seated.
