Wheel deburring system

Application example

While the cast wheel turns on the positioner, a laser profile sensor scans the window edges in 3D and finds the burred edges. The robot guides the cutter along a path built from the measured edge; a second scan measures the edge again.

Information delivered

The measured edge position determines the robot tool path. Initial and final profiles are compared on the operator display; the residual-height result is sent to the wheel record and line control.

Need

Casting burr size and direction vary along a window edge. A fixed tool path can approach a clean edge too closely or miss a burr, so the edge must be measured again after machining.

Solution approach

Window edges of the wheel rotating on a tilted positioner are scanned with a radial laser line. The edge profile is matched to a reference and a robot tool path is generated from the burred sections. Residual height is measured on a second revolution and compared with the initial profile on the display.

Process steps

  1. 01

    3D scan

The wheel makes one turn; the laser line profiles every window edge.

  2. 02

    Burr detection

The edge profile is compared with the reference; burred sections and their heights are found.

  3. 03

    Deburring

The robot removes the burr along a tool path that follows the measured edge.

  4. 04

    Re-scan

The wheel turns again and the machined edges are profiled once more.

  5. 05

    Decide

Residual burr height is compared with the limit value.
