Straw presence check on beverage cartons

Solution concept

The straw face of the beverage carton is imaged by a side camera. Directional light separates the elongated straw shape; a carton without a straw in the expected region is removed by a pusher.

Information delivered

Straw presence and region coverage are sent to the PLC; a carton without a straw is separated by the pusher. The search region and decision are shown on the operator display.

Need

The transparent straw wrapper and carton print can produce similar edges. When carton orientation changes, the expected straw region must also be tracked in the image.

Solution approach

A side camera faces the surface carrying the straw; an oblique bar light highlights the straw and wrapper edges. The search region is positioned relative to the carton edges, then the presence and coverage of the elongated shape are checked.

Process steps

  1. 01

    Infeed

The product is carried into the inspection station.

  2. 02

    Trigger

The photo-sensor reports the product position.

  3. 03

    Acquire

Directional light strobes; the straw face of the carton is imaged.

  4. 04

    Analyse

The straw shape is searched in a region positioned relative to reference edges.

  5. 05

    Decision and separation

The result is sent to the display and PLC; a non-conforming product is separated.
