Height, diameter and verticality gauging of bottles from silhouette
The single-file bottle is imaged from the side against a backlight. Height, body diameter and neck axis are extracted from silhouette edges; a bottle outside the measurement window is separated.
Height, diameter and verticality are sent to the PLC and measurement record. A bottle with a tilted neck is separated; the silhouette and measurement lines are shown on the operator display.

Need
Reflections in a transparent bottle obscure the body boundary. Lateral displacement and sway on the belt make it difficult to separate neck tilt from actual shape deviation.
Solution approach
A collimated panel behind the bottle creates a dark silhouette. Edges acquired by the side camera with telecentric optics are aligned to the base reference; height, body diameter and neck-axis verticality relative to the base are measured separately.
Process steps
- 01
Infeed
The product is carried into the inspection station.
- 02
Trigger
The photo-sensor reports the product position.
- 03
Acquire
The bottle silhouette is acquired against the backlight.
- 04
Analyse
Height, diameter and neck verticality are measured from the base reference.
- 05
Decision and separation
The result is sent to the display and PLC; a non-conforming product is separated.
