Datum-aligned hole position and geometric tolerances on joining plates
A joining plate is located in a fixture and edges are aligned to datum coordinates. Hole boundaries are found through caliper regions; nominal and measured centres are compared to demonstrate position tolerance and PLC acceptance.
Datum coordinates, centre position and deviation are linked to the measurement record. The PLC issues accept or hold; full geometric-tolerance evaluation requires the part drawing, datum scheme and validated calibration.

Need
Plate rotation in the image and fixture clearance can make hole positions appear displaced. Hole centres must be evaluated in the located datum frame rather than directly on image axes.
Solution approach
Caliper regions sample datum edges and hole boundaries in a controlled overhead image. Lines are fitted to reference edges and circles to hole boundaries; datum alignment removes rotation and translation. Centre displacement is compared with tolerance in calibrated coordinates.
Process steps
- 01
Locate
The plate seats on fixture references.
- 02
Reference and trigger
Datum edges are located and image pose is aligned.
- 03
Sample
The hole boundary is sampled through separate caliper regions.
- 04
Geometric analysis
Nominal-to-measured centre displacement is calculated.
- 05
Tolerance and PLC
The illustrative position limit becomes a PLC accept or hold decision.
