DataMatrix reading and traceability in supplier production
The part pauses briefly beneath the fixed reader; its directly marked DataMatrix code is decoded under low-angle ring lighting and its quality graded. The serial number is logged; a code with insufficient quality is diverted for re-marking.
Decoded serial number, cell contrast and quality grade are written to the part record; the part carrying an NG code is routed to the re-marking bin.

Need
Low contrast in a code marked directly on metal can weaken traceability at later stations even when its serial number can be read. Code content and mark quality are verified separately.
Solution approach
The photo-sensor triggers the reader; the part pauses during code analysis. The overhead view preserves the cell pattern and low-angle ring light emphasizes dot marks on metal. The code is decoded and its cell contrast profile checked against the acceptance limit; the serial number is logged and an insufficient code diverted.
Process steps
- 01
Trigger
The photo-sensor sees the part and the reader fires when the code enters its field of view.
- 02
Decode
The part pauses briefly; the ring light strobes, the code is located and the serial number decoded.
- 03
Grading
Cell contrast and dot pattern are measured and the code receives a quality grade.
- 04
Record
Serial number and grade are written to the production record.
