Non-contact 3D geometric measurement of cast parts
While the casting makes one turn on a rotary table, a laser profile sensor scans its surface into a point cloud. The cloud is aligned with the nominal model; a deviation map is produced and hole pitches and diameters are compared with tolerance.
Point count, hole dimensions and maximum surface deviation are presented with the colour map; dimensional acceptance and the surface NG finding are shown separately.

Need
Hole dimensions on a cast bracket can be acceptable while the boss surface deviates from nominal geometry. Measuring only a few dimensions can miss a local surface deviation.
Solution approach
The part is fixtured on its datum faces on a rotary table. An overhead laser line samples successive sections during rotation; height profiles form a point cloud of geometry absent from a 2D silhouette. The cloud is aligned with the nominal model and converted to a deviation map; hole dimensions and surface deviation are evaluated separately.
Process steps
- 01
Fixturing
The part sits on its datum faces on the table and the laser line switches on.
- 02
Scan
The table turns, the laser line sweeps the surface and the point cloud grows.
- 03
Compare
The cloud is aligned with the nominal model and a colour deviation map appears.
- 04
Dimensions
Hole centres are fitted; pitches and diameter are checked against the tolerance band.
- 05
Decide
The largest surface deviation is compared with the tolerance limit.
