Gearbox gear noise analysis and inspection system
On the end-of-line bench the gearbox is run at defined speed steps; microphone and accelerometer signals are converted into an order spectrum referenced to shaft speed. The level at the gear-mesh order is compared with the limit.
The spectrum and limit result for each speed step are written to the test record. The operator display identifies the exceeded order, and the stack light indicates the gearbox inspection status.

Need
Gear-mesh noise changes with speed and load, while bench vibration and ambient sound enter the measurement. Total sound level alone can hide a local increase at the gear-mesh order.
Solution approach
The microphone is placed in the near field of the housing and an accelerometer is mounted on it; drive and load machines establish the test steps. Signals are converted into an order spectrum referenced to shaft speed: the gear-mesh component stays at the same order at every speed, and its peak and sidebands are compared with a reference limit.
Process steps
- 01
Run-up
The drive machine brings the gearbox to test speed while the load machine applies torque.
- 02
Measure
The microphone records airborne noise; the accelerometer on the housing records vibration.
- 03
Spectrum
The signal is resolved into orders of shaft speed and the spectrum is averaged.
- 04
Decide
The gear-mesh order and its sidebands are compared with the limit.
