3D burr-volume measurement on machined groove profiles
A laser profiler travels along a grooved metal part. Successive cross-sections form a point cloud; local material volume above the nominal groove floor and peak height are calculated to highlight the burr region.
Burr region, peak height and excess volume are linked to the part measurement record. The PLC issues a hold or rework request; illustrative numbers do not guarantee field measurement capability or resolution.

Need
A burr at the groove floor can blend with bright metal and side-wall shadows. Area seen in a single image is not volume; physical height profiles relative to a reference floor are required.
Solution approach
The laser line samples cross-sections while controlled axis motion orders profiles along the part. A point cloud aligned to side and groove-floor references isolates material above the nominal surface. Local height and excess surface volume are evaluated together.
Process steps
- 01
Locate
The grooved part seats on the fixture reference.
- 02
Reference and trigger
Scan head and groove reference are verified.
- 03
Sample
Laser profiles form a point cloud along the scan motion.
- 04
Geometric analysis
Height above the nominal floor and burr volume are calculated.
- 05
Tolerance and PLC
The burr limit is checked and a PLC hold request is generated.
