Three-output sorting of mixed metal scrap by shape class
Mixed metal scraps are routed to a three-output sorter by silhouette and appearance class. Rotary gates are synchronized with arrival position; overlapping and uncertain pieces are sent to the review output.
Shape class, decision score and tracked position define the PLC output recipe. Gates open according to actual part position; uncertain examples are held in the third bin for operator review.

Need
Bright scrap pieces overlap and their contours change with arrival angle. RGB images can describe shape; alloy or metal identity requires a separate physical measurement.
Solution approach
Contour and image features are classified under controlled overhead light. Piece position is tied to its trigger; as it approaches the outputs, the PLC sequences two diverter gates. Low-score or overlapping pieces are held at the third output.
Process steps
- 01
Infeed
Scrap arrives under the camera in one layer.
- 02
Trigger and acquire
The outer contour is imaged under controlled light.
- 03
Analyse
Shape features and overlap are evaluated.
- 04
Class and position
Part position is mapped to target gate timing.
- 05
Controlled sorting
The gate rotates and the piece enters the selected chute and bin.
